VanBUG Winter 2015 events – save the dates!

Dear VanBUGger,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday break. VanBUG is returning on Thursday, February 12th at 6pm with Dr. Nick Loman from the Institute for Microbiology and Infection at University of Birmingham. Dr. Loman’s talk is titled: “Genomes from metagenomes: new technologies and algorithms”.

Bio: Dr. Loman is an Independent Research Fellow in the Institute for Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham. His research explores the use of cutting-edge genomics and metagenomics approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of infectious disease. He has so far used high-throughput sequencing to investigate outbreaks of important bacterial pathogens. He was involved in the crowd-sourced analysis of genomics data from the Shiga-toxin producing E. coli O104:H4 outbreak in Germany. He helped to spark a flurry of crowd-sourced analysis by putting the initial genome assembly on his blog for anyone to access. A more general aim in his group is to develop bioinformatics tools to aid the interpretation of genome and metagenome-scale data in routine clinical practice.

Dr. Loman will also give two other talks during his visit. The first is taking place at BC Centre for Disease Control Grand Round at noon on Feb 12th. The talk is entitled “Prospective outbreak surveillance with real-time whole-genome sequencing”. The second talk (“Microevolution in Pseudomonas in patients and hospitals”) will take place at the Life Sciences Institute, UBC on Feb 13th at 2pm. More details to follow.

For the rest of the season:

March 12 (Thursday) 2015: Dr. Titus Brown, UC Davis.

April 9th (Thursday) 2015: Dr. Martin Hirst, Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, BC Cancer Agency and University of British Columbia

Seminar is followed by complementary pizza, refreshments and great networking.
