My name is Dr. Deborah Tsuyuki and I am the manager of the newly started University of Manitoba Next Generation Sequencing platform. The University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine has been talking about starting a bioinformatics lab, with a PI at the helm, but at the present time we have a need for someone to analyze the results from our sequencers, once they are up and running. We have three instruments, the Life Technologies SOLiD 5500xl, an Ion Torrent PGM and a Illumina MiSeq. Although we have the associated servers and software with the three instruments, these programs usually do alignments and provide some metrics, but do not go so far as providing biological significance to the results.

I was given the name of Kendric Wang as someone who was graduating from a bioinformatics program and might be interested in employment. He, however, has plans to stay with his present lab and suggested that I contact you in case any of his classmates are interested. We have not gotten as far as posting a position yet, since the salary support is not yet in place, but if anyone in your program is interested, they can forward their resume to me. I am expecting the salary support to be announced within the month. Life Technologies has a bioinformatics course available, which we would be able to support, for specific information relating to NGS. Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested and thank you for your assistance.

Regards,

Inria project team SYMBIOSE is seeking highly qualified and motivated
candidates for a 12 months postdoctoral position.

Research Program :
Next Generation Sequencing technologies generate data of a new type in
huge volumes and crucial computational developments are needed to take
full advantage of these data. The successful candidate will develop new
algorithms to identify complex genomic variants in such data from
multiple samples without the use of a reference genome. Our approach
relies on a formal model based on the De-Bruijn graph structure to
handle huge amounts of data and extract biologically relevant information.

For further details visit our website http://www.irisa.fr/symbiose/ and
the project description

http://www.irisa.fr/symbiose/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=29

Profile :
- PhD in computational biology or algorithmics with a strong interest for biology
- good programming skills (C, C++, python, java, …)
- background in sequence and graph algorithmics
- a prior experience with high throughput sequencing data will be appreciated
- to apply, the candidate must have spent less than 6 months in France during the years 2010 and 2011

Working environment :
The position is located in France, in the city of Rennes at the INRIA
Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique center. SYMBIOSE is a dynamic and
multi-disciplinary research team working in computational biology and
bioinformatics. The contract is for 12 months, starting as soon as
January 2012. Salary is 2620 euros monthly before taxes deduction.

Application :
Please send a cover letter, a CV with publications and two references
contacts to claire.lemaitre@inria.fr.

Title: Statistical methods for genotype imputation: Past, present, and future

Abstract:

Over the past five years, one of the central pursuits in human genetics has been the use of genome-wide association studies to discover genetic variants that
affect disease risk. These studies have identified thousands of well-supported associations between genetic markers and human traits, and their success can
be partially attributed to a few key advances in statistical methodology. One of these advances, known as “genotype imputation,” uses the correlation structure
of genetic variation in a reference database (such as those provided by the HapMap and 1,000 Genomes Projects) to predict genotypes that were not measured
in a particular study. When these unobserved genotypes are estimated accurately, they can accelerate discovery by revealing new associated regions and
providing greater detail in regions of known association.

In this talk, I will discuss the development of the genotype imputation field from its initial stages to its modern-day applications, with a focus on the major
conceptual and statistical challenges that were confronted along the way. I will also discuss the prospects for improving imputation methodology, the role
these methods will play as the human genetics field moves toward DNA sequencing technologies, and some of my new work in collaborative biological research.

Dear BTP and IOP student,

You are invited to our annual Bioinformatics & Oncology Research Day, where you’ll have the opportunity to present your work and find out about the fascinating, interdisciplinary research presently going on around you. Highlights include guest speakers, poster sessions, lunch and dinner buffets, lightning talks, and prizes to be won!

Time: March 15, 2012 Thursday from starting at 10:00 AM
Place: Cordula & Günter Paetzold Health Education Centre, VGH

To find out more about this must-see event, and to register and submit abstracts, please visit our site at: https://sites.google.com/site/btpiopretreat2012/. Please register by February 16, 2012 so we order enough food, and don’t forget to submit your abstracts by February 23, 2012 for a chance to win prizes!

Hope to see you at the event,
