Bioinformatics reading group talk

This week Jiarui Ding will present about his research in “Integrating heterogeneous datasets for tumor stratification”. Here is more details about his talk:
Abstract:
Cancer is a disease of the genome. However, we have observed that tumors show similarity in phenotype (mRNA gene expression) but heterogeneity in DNA mutations. Recent studies have shown that treatments based on patient gene expression instead of DNA mutations produce better outcomes. At the same time, current technology advances have made it possible to simultaneously measure a tumor from different angles, e.g., mutation, gene expression, DNA methylation. Each biological measurement provides a specific view of the tumor. Here we investigate the problem of integrative analysis of multiple genome-wide measurements to facilitate personalized treatment. Specifically, we proposed an efficient algorithm to integrate heterogeneous datasets for cancer patient stratification, i.e., putting patients into different groups such that the patients in the same group are similar to each other and may be treated by the same drug. Experiments conducted on The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets illustrate the reliability of our method.
